About the Rand Tower: Rand Tower was developed in 1929 by Rufus R. Rand, one of the Twin Cities’ most prominent businessmen at that time. Rand built Rand Tower to house his business, Minneapolis Gas (later Minnegasco), but the building meant much more to him. Rand Tower represented the realization of a dream for Rand. At the time of its completion, Rand Tower was one of the two tallest buildings west of the Mississippi River. Rand developed the building as a symbol of the future greatness of the city of Minneapolis. From the award-winning architectural design, to its elegant art deco style, Rand Tower displays much of the personality of its developer. Rufus Rand was a World War I aviator and the first licensed pilot in the state of Minnesota. His love of aviation is apparent throughout the building, including the terrazzo floors in the lobby area, the carved limestone facade and the statue of “Wings” in the lobby. This hand-carved bronze statue is the work of famed sculptor, Oskar J. W. Hansen.
